The Story

Hi All, Fivecast is back hosting us, and this one is about money! Matthew Lowry, Senior Software Architect at Fivecast, has been with the company from day one. He was heavily involved in early development of the company's products, and has spent the last 18 months driving a cost telemetry and management effort across a large AWS estate. At Fivecast's scale, small changes in how services are used save serious dollars, and some services scale surprisingly badly on cost, even when built to AWS reference architectures. Matt will walk through what they measured, where the surprises were, and the creative alternatives that replaced the expensive bits. Fivecast runs at a bigger AWS spend than most of us, so this is a look at the problems you might meet later when scaling up...
