The Story

Join movie club member Nick M for the next film in his series focusing on the works of Stanley Kubrick! Responsible for films like 2001: A Space Odessey, Full Metal Jacket, and The Shining; he influenced directors like Martin Scorsese, Steven Spielberg, Woody Allen, George Lucas, and Paul Thomas Anderson. The next film we're looking at is Dr. Strangelove (1964). Here's how it works: 1. We'll meet at Lucky Lab in SE at 6:30pm ([map](https://maps.app.goo.gl/74mfMgaTezMmPe7D6)), we'll have a sign at our table (be sure to check outside just in case the weather is nice). 2. Grab a drink and we'll spend some time discussing the film with us (NOTE: Just like a book club, we watch the movie before we meet, streaming links below). **Movie Spotlight: Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb** Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb is a 1964 black comedy directed by Stanley Kubrick, based in part on Peter George's novel Red Alert. Set during the Cold War, the film follows a chain of events triggered when a rogue American general orders a nuclear attack on the Soviet Union, bringing the world to the brink of catastrophe. As political leaders, military officials, and the eccentric former Nazi scientist Dr. Strangelove attempt to avert disaster, the film satirizes nuclear deterrence, military bureaucracy, and the irrationality of political power. Notable for Peter Sellers' multiple performances and its sharp blend of comedy and suspense, the film is widely regarded as one of the greatest satires ever made. The film received widespread critical acclaim and has since become a landmark of American and British cinema. Dr. Strangelove was nominated for four Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Director for Stanley Kubrick, Best Actor for Peter Sellers, and Best Adapted Screenplay, but did not win in any category.
