But put us in a group and things can change. We say something we don't quite believe, go along with something we don't want, or become acutely aware of who other people expect us to be. In this session we ask what happens to us when other people are watching. Through George Orwell's "Shooting an Elephant" and Langston Hughes's "Salvation," we'll look at two people caught between what they feel inside and what the crowd around them expects. Together, we'll explore: Why are other people's expectations so powerful? Who do we become in a group? What does it take to stay connected to our own experience when everyone seems to want something different? The readings will be sent as soon as you register, and preparation is designed to take under two hours. No prior experience with the authors or the ideas is expected. Come curious. **Details** Thursday, October 22 6:30–8:00 PM In person in Portland 722 N Page St, Portland, door code sh
